Definition of Product Backlog Management
In the context of Scrum, Product Backlog Management encompasses the following:
- Formulating and clearly communicating the Product Goal
- Creating and clearly presenting items on the Product Backlog
- Ordering the Product Backlog items
- Ensuring the transparency and understandability of the Product Backlog
The Product Owner (PO) is responsible for effective Product Backlog management. This means the Product Owner may either perform the aforementioned work themselves or delegate the responsibility to others. However, the PO remains ultimately accountable.
Furthermore, the Scrum Team regularly updates the backlog. This is also known as refinement of the Product Backlog. The purpose of this is to ensure that the backlog remains relevant, understandable and usable. This way, the Scrum Team continues to deliver valuable additions to the product. The Product Owner is also responsible for maximizing the value of the product.
